High School Principal Reform Now!

Part 2. Response to feedback

--

Recently, I wrote a piece looking at possible reforms to the high school Principal role. I’ve been thinking it a lot as my school looks to start the hiring process for its fourth Principal in the seven years that I’ve worked there. You can read it here. The general idea is that perhaps if the role is grinding through people, we might consider changing the role itself, rather than keep trying to find the “right person” for a position may no longer be aligned to our needs. From this, I proposed a more collaborative, equitable Co-Principal structure that eliminates any distinction in job responsibilities between the traditional Deputy Principal/Principal split.

In the time since I’ve written it, I’ve also shipped it over to all sorts of people I know who are in divisional Leadership roles in all sorts of school systems so that I could see what they think. My work has placed me proximal to these roles, but (to this point) never in them. I’m fortunate to have access to a wide network of educators who are only too happy to share their thinking with me. I’ve taken some of what they’ve written and summarized it in this piece, along with my thinking.

A worthwhile idea

I think it’s important to note that everyone who has shared their thinking about this with me…
