It’s interesting that you feel like it becomes inane once it’s a number.

Most teachers I know don’t find numerical grades to be all that useful. When I read an essay, I feel pretty sure that I can clearly identify whether a student has done an excellent job, earning an A, or a pretty good job, earning them a B. I can tell you who’s doing A work this quarter in my classes and who’s doing B work.
