So Long, Instagram

Mark Zuckerberg sucks. More than ever.

--

I know it’s a bit trite to write about a decision to leave any particular social network, but I’m still going to. I left Instagram last week. Not really because of Instagram itself. I was decently early to the app (spring of 2011, a year or so before its purchase by Facebook), and I enjoyed it most when it was the original thing. I don’t absolutely hate what it has since become, but I find it cluttered with lots of things I don’t really care about. I did like sharing reels with friends, and its messaging side was a fine enough way to connect with some of the people who are important in my life. But it had become increasingly rare that I used it for its initial purpose of posting to my profile outside of ephemeral stories. In my experience, it hadn’t become quite as enshittified as some of the other platforms that I’ve moved off of over the years (Facebook and Twitter being the obvious examples), but it was by no means better when I left than when I started.

All of that noted, I left because Mark Zuckerberg sucks. In truth, he’s always kind of sucked, but the most recent version of him is the worst yet. I’m sure readers are well aware of the various post-election moves that Zuckerberg has made. If you really need to know, 404 Media is doing good reporting on it, or you can get it directly from the Times if you still want…
